The Simplified Lean (Waste Free) Manufacturing Workshop(s)
These series of workshops and training programs were created to teach a variety of various skills on Simplified Lean (waste free) Manufacturing-Training. The workshops are conducted by MRGC Senior Consultant Len Jacobs, Lean Practitioner, who has been working with business and industry to help streamline the manufacturing process while avoiding strategic expenditures since 1983. Len has specialized in training and implementing Simplified Lean (Waste free) manufacturing systems in a wide range of industries.
MRGC Senior Consultant Wayne Warwick, Lean Practitioner, has been assisting Manufacturing Organizations since 1987 in implementing Continuous Improvement by identifying, and eliminating waste, through Kaizen and Lean techniques across North America.
The three basic workshops include:
- 5S & Value Stream Mapping (The Foundation of Simplified Lean)
- The Simplified Lean (Waste Free) Manufacturing “Toolbox Workshop” (Covers the Technologies and Tools that provide “Flexibility-Reliability and Predictability”)
- Simplified Lean Test Drive (Is a practical hands-on factory simulation workshop created to help managers, staff, and production personnel clarify and understand the power of Lean Thinking)

Each of these sessions is 1/2 day in duration.

1. 5S & Value Stream Mapping:
5S is a highly effective system which when implemented properly, will help you to simplify and standardize your operations and thereby enable dramatic and measurable results in manufacturing operations. Because of its pivotal role in manufacturing improvement, 5S can truly be called the foundation of Simplified Lean Manufacturing.
The “Toolbox Workshop” will focus on 5S and Value Stream Mapping, the key lean technologies that establish the foundation for Simplified Lean Manufacturing and provide an approach for identifying and eliminating waste both in manufacturing and in the office.
Specifically the workshop will cover:
- Simplified Lean and 5S
- What is a 5S system?
- Setting the stage for 5S implementation
- S Case study: Covering both shop floor and office
- 5S-The Elements: Participants will learn what each of the elements mean and gain a complete understanding of how they fit together to eliminate waste and clutter in the work area. We will also discuss Value Stream Mapping and its role.
2. The Simplified Lean (Waste Free) Manufacturing "Toolbox Workshop"
The "Toolbox Workshop" will discuss the Simplified Lean (waste free) Manufacturing Pyramid and a group of key lean technologies and tools that assist manufacturers to improve “Flexibility-Reliability and Predictability”
The session will address the following Lean Technologies and Tools that provide “Flexibility-Reliability and Predictability”.
- Mistake Proofing (Pokayoke-Failsafing)
- Quick Changeover (S.M.E.D. Set-up time reduction)
- Kanban
- Cellular Layout
- The Kaizen Blitz Approach
Specifically it will address:
- What they are!
- When you need to use them!
- The benefits of each one!
- The part they play in a lean (waste free) manufacturing system
Presented By: Wayne Warwick
3. The Simplified Lean (Waste Free) Manufacturing - Test Drive
The Lean Test Drive is a practical hands-on factory simulation workshop created to help managers, staff, and production personnel clarify and understand the power of Lean Thinking.
The session will:
- Physically demonstrate the dramatic results that Lean Thinking can achieve in many areas such as:
- Reducing production lead time (PLT)
- Reducing work-in-progress inventory
- Reducing rework/potential scrap
- Reducing finished goods inventory
- Implementing pull versus push material flow
- Demonstrate how you can improve the agility and/or response time of your operation at the same time increasing capacity through the elimination of waste
- Provide you with a simple easy-to-understand approach that will enable you to achieve buy-in and successfully implement Lean Manufacturing.
