Outboard II
Building on the outboard I (basics) course. This course will focus on troubleshooting techniques and failure analysis. Receive hands on instruction on the proper use of multimeters.
- Basic fuel system - supply, bleed, curb, (small outboards)
- Basic lube system - oil injection, linkage and sync (small outboard)
- Basic ignition system - API, CDM (small outboard, kept simple)
- Basic cooling system - water pumps, thermostats, poppet valves
- Troubleshooting
- step by step process to repair the root cause of the problem (not just repairing the result)
- repair order complaints, questions to ask customer
- discuss trouble shooting tools – scan tool, DVA meter, multimeter, compression tester, remote tank, remote key box, spark tester, manuals
- discuss possible breakdown scenarios and ask class to solve (use to evaluate class skill level)
Hands-On
- Multimeter use, use to diagnosis power supply, DVA use, use to diagnosis ignition system
- Carb disassembly, small engine (when doing fuel system/theory)
- Ignition testing, small engine (when doing ignition system theory)
- Disassemble small power head (if time permits, small block supply)
